I need help from my bloggy friends. I've done some googling, and can't really find a definitive answer. I don't really feel like calling my doc, although I guess I could. But I'd rather ask you lovelies!
It's been 3 weeks and a day since my D&C. I haven't bled since Friday, so almost a week. And I just went to the bathroom and saw a ton of EWCM - like boatloads! Back in my natural TTC days, I never got that much. A few months before I started treatments, I took evening primrose oil prior to ovulation, and that helped a bit. But even with EPO, I never saw EWCM like this. So my question is, should I try something with the hubby tonight? Is it too early? I seem to remember people saying that fertility increases after a m/c and after a D&C, but should I wait until I get a period? I know there's some emotional reasons for waiting a month, but what about physical? Is it safe to get pregnant so soon after a m/c?

I didn't prevent the first month after my miscarriage and I wasn't told to prevent ~ so I would think it's okay. But I have heard some other women say that they were instructed to take some time off from trying after a m/c so that their body can normalize. I guess best bet is to call the doc to be safe.
ReplyDeleteIf it was me I would do it.
ReplyDeletei'm not sure what the answer is to this, but hoping the other girls can provide some. i've heard of a bunch of girls having lots of ewcm right after a miscarriage, and that you're fertile after one, so maybe???
ReplyDeletethis anxiety and second guessing sucks. thinking of you alex :o) xoxo
If you weren't told to prevent, I don't see why not. My mom had a miscarriage and didn't prevent the following cycle, and coincidentally got pregnant with my brother. Weirder shit has happened. :)
ReplyDeleteI think the only reason they say to wait until you have your first period is for dating purposes, so they'll have a better idea of when you got pregnant, etc. I say GO FOR IT! The ultrasound can date it for you, if this is your month. Good luck, dearie!
ReplyDeleteSome doctors say to wait one cycle (or three) but in the research I've done there's not a real medical basis for this. The exception is if there is anything left inside (i.e, if the walls haven't shed fully because then implantation could be problematic). But with a D&C, I would imagine that this is not an issue. I've heard some people say that your lining might be thin but, again, I haven't really heard much to back this up.
ReplyDeleteSo, I say: put that EWCM to good use go for it. Fingers very crossed!!!!
There are so many conflicting answers about this. My doctor told me that physically, though, there can be problems (sometimes) with the lining the first cycle after a m/c. However, some docs disagree.
ReplyDeleteIf you want to, go for it!
Honestly I don't know as I haven't been there but I did want to say how much I respect you for looking forward. You're so great!
ReplyDeleteI was told after a chemical pregnancy to abstain, but honestly, I think it was more for emotional reasons than anything. My sister had a chemical one month and got pregnant the very next month with my nephew. After my D&C we were told to abstain but that was because we were going to gear up for a first IVF round. Not sure any of that helps. My personal thought is: if the embryo isn't going to take for some reason as a result of the D&C, you may have a chemical, or, at worst have to endure another miscarriage. If you can handle that, then, I say go for it. At best, you get pregnant and move on!
ReplyDeleteI have no personal experince to offer on this topic, but, hey, the others are saying it's a go! *shrug* So, why the eff not! Good luck!
ReplyDeleteYesterday when I saw my RE for my whats next appointment and he gave me the green light (yay), he mentioned the arbitrary nature of waiting 3 months after a m/c. He doesn't buy it, he thinks and I quote "they just pull a bloody number out of the air and go with it". So for what its worth, my very experienced RE said that yesterday.
ReplyDeleteI have had more EWCM than ever last month after my surgery, its so odd.
Good luck!
I don't know for sure about the ewcm, but I know my dr wanted me to wait 2 cycles or 8 weeks before we try again. Her reasoning is that, should I get pregnant before then, my lining may not be sufficient to maintain a pregnancy. Do with that what you will.
ReplyDeleteAfter reading every one else's answers (after I posted my answer...lol), I think it'd be best to call your doc. Obviously, every doctor thinks differently. haha It's all quite helpful. And, for what it's worth, my dr DID tell me that we needed to use protection for the next 8 weeks to prevent pregnancy, but she said we could resume sex whenever we wanted.
ReplyDeleteI'd go with the moment and jump him tonight. Sure, there may be lining issues, but there may not be. You'll never know until you go for it. If you don't you just might kick yourself for having lost such an unexpected opportunity!
ReplyDeleteIf it feels right for you, I'd say go for it! Enjoy the intimacy with your hubby and try not to worry.
ReplyDeleteDelurking to say go for it. I got pregnant after one of my miscarriages and it was my only successful pregnancy (had a baby in the end and everything!). Every m/c before that, I had always waited. So in the end, my advice, for what it's worth, is that you should do whatever you feel comfortable doing without focusing on the arbitrary medical advice to wait 3 months. I remember that before my finally-successful cycle, I decided for once to trust my body (because usually my body didn't seem at all trustworthy, esp. when it came to TTC): if my body got pregnant so soon after a m/c, then it must know what it's doing; if I didn't get pregnant, my body must know what it's doing there, too, and it was just too soon.
ReplyDeleteGo for it!!! The only thing I've heard is that you have a slightly higher chance of a miscarriage because the lining may not be thick enough. However, I think that's a slim chance for one thing, and for another, I feel like if a baby can freaking stick in my TUBE, it can stick in a relatively measly uterine lining, right??? Also, you could just go on progesterone to maintain the lining and I think that would maintain the pregnancy.
ReplyDeleteI vote yes! I went through the same thing after my first miscarriage, and after reading all the stories online about people who got pregnant again right away, I went for it. And I DID get pregnant again right away, too! Although it was ectopic... but when I asked my OB if the ectopic could have ben caused by not waiting, she said no way. So I think you are safe.
I was told that if you get prego before having a period after a d&e that is maybe hard to date the pregnancy because you dont have a LMP...unless you do a OPK and can get a positive test that could be at least ovulation mark...Also they always told me to wait a month for lining purposes but if you have any progesterone you could start on that after ovulation...we did that with one of our pregnancies...when we got a positive OPK we started Lovenox and Prog too...So I would say depends what you feel comfortable with but I was def more fertile after our miscarriages
ReplyDeleteMy RE told us we had to wait 2 cycles after my first m/c before we could cycle with him again. However, I've also heard that your body is more fertile following a miscarriage (perhaps that explains the copious EWCM?). I know my chances are VERY slim at a natural conception, but I'm personally not going to wait. I say GO FOR IT!!!!
ReplyDeleteGiven what the other expert ladies have said.. I hope ypu went for it if you felt like it!:)) you never know right?? Thinking of you sweetie xxx
